The Pyramids https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/18/the-pyramids/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/18/the-pyramids/#respond Sun, 18 May 2014 16:01:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/18/the-pyramids/ The first pyramid discovered by the modern man was in Egypt.Later Spaniards saw them  in Central America. Subsequently they were found in many countries like China,Taiwan,Antartica, under the sea in Japan and recently in Bosnia.
Egyptologists,Scientists & Archeologists give various explanations why Pyramids were built. They say they were not decorative(tombs)but functional buildings like power plants. Some say they generate sound by resonance at a certain frequency. Some others say they produced static electricity and transmitted by wireless technology. Mr.Tesla demonstrated wireless transmission of power nearly 200 years ago in USA. Those who explored the interior of Pyramids have found the stones(Dolomite, Granite etc) used were of different types(chemical composition) at various levels of the Pyramids confirming that the ancient Egyptians knew chemistry. They have seen wall paintings showing hand held electric lamps too. They say natural disasters won’t strike in the area where Pyramids are built because they generate electromagnetic waves.
They have given explanations for the orientation of various pyramids suggesting they knew Astronomy as well. Because they were built nearly 5000years ago and no written records are available Egyptologists  interpret the pictures drawn on the walls into words and numbers.  Where they were built, they have found underground aquifers like in our Jaffna peninsula. Shall we try to build a sample Pyramid in Jaffna by collaborating with Egyptologists?. Scientists have proved if you keep a fruit, vegetable or egg at the centre of a pyramid shaped cage, they will never rot.

Engineering education in North & East https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/15/engineering-education-in-north-east/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/15/engineering-education-in-north-east/#respond Thu, 15 May 2014 11:18:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/05/15/engineering-education-in-north-east/ We have seen many of our youths going to Colombo or abroad by spending lot of money for travelling, boarding, lodging etc in addition to tuition fees for higher education as there are no private Institutes in North & East to study Medicine,Pharmacy,Engineering,Architecture,Quantity surveying, Draughtsman ship, Surveyors etc as well as foreign exams like EC,C& G,CIMA,ACCA,BCS,ACS, Banking,Business administration,Management,Marketing etc etc due to the limited number of student intake in State Universities. It is time to get together and start private universities funded by OSAs of our schools, well wishers, expatriates etc. Who is going to bell the cat,can our North & East provincial councils come forward?.

rain water storage https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/27/rain-water-storage/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/27/rain-water-storage/#respond Sun, 27 Apr 2014 12:37:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/27/rain-water-storage/ As there were/are no rivers in Jaffna/Kokuvil our ancestors built reservoirs(kulam)in kokuvil too but now many of them may have disappeared or depleted. In 1950s I remember there were two in nanthavil farmland and one in nariyankundu near parameswara college junction. There might have been one in thalayali and another on eastern side of kulapiddy junction as during rainy season water was getting collected there and in the nights frogs make a lot of noises. If we don’t store surface rain water-floodwater-our wells might become drier day by day.Our local bodies and NPC should take care of this.

1)Swimming has become a popular sport as well as an exercise for keeping the body in good shape. In Colombo all big schools are equipped with a swimming pool each but in Kokuvil the only big school don’t have. Why can’t we(OSA) help them to construct, operate and maintain a swimming pool?.
It will be shame if someone say he/she don’t know how to swim, nowadays. In 1950s some learnt swimming in wells at Nanthavil farmland.
2)In 1950s & 60s there was a workshop at Kokuvil Hindu where students below grade 9 learnt handwork like moulding by hand different shapes like parrot, cow etc Although the workshop master was a good carpenter we didn’t learn carpentry?. Before that in elementary school we learnt to make(weave) home needs(petti,puttu-neethu petty etc) from palmyrah leaves. Due to advancement of science today schools, should teach engineering skills to students before GCE(OL) so that they can do minor engineering works like using soldering iron, welding, saw, chisel, engineering file, carpentry, electrical wiring fundamentals, radio fundmentals,TV fundamentals etc etc. If school management cannot obtain these from Govt, let them appeal to OSA worldwide as well as rich people of Kokuvil to contribute.

National diploma in Technology Course(NDT) https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/24/national-diploma-in-technology-coursendt/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/24/national-diploma-in-technology-coursendt/#respond Thu, 24 Apr 2014 10:35:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/24/national-diploma-in-technology-coursendt/ In 1950s a 2year diploma course known as Junior Technical Officers course in engineering was conducted at Maradana Technical College where degree in engineering too was conducted. In 1962 with Canadian aid an institute called Institute of Practical Technology started at Katubedde, Moratuwa and JTO course too was transferred to Moratuwa.  In 1964 Engineering faculty was shifted to Peradeniya. In 1967 in order to conduct a 5year diploma course in engineering IPT was upgraded to Ceylon College of Technology. Subsequently it was made Moratuwa campus of University of Ceylon to award a degree in engineering instead of 5year diploma. Meanwhile JTO course was renamed Technicians course and later NDT(National diploma in engineering)course. Years later some staff there wanted NDT to be removed from there and the tension between undergraduates and diploma students was increasing. In 2012 I came to know that they are planning to build a new Institute at Homagama to train 1000 NDT students per year. The govt policy was the ratio of graduated to diplomates is 1:4. As you are aware a degree course in engineering is being conducted in Peradeniya,Moratuwa and Ruhunu universities and they want to start same in Jaffna(killinochci),Eastern province & SriJayawardenepura too. When I suggested instead of training 1000students at one location to start NDT course in 5 provinces to reduce expenses incurred by students ,nobody accepted. Will our politicians talk to the authorities to decentralise NDT course in 5 Higher technical Institutes in Jaffna,Kurunegala, Colombo, Matara, Kandy etc .In-plant training to student  may be given Colombo where many industries are located.

Farm lands in Jaffna https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/23/farm-lands-in-jaffna/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/23/farm-lands-in-jaffna/#respond Wed, 23 Apr 2014 02:37:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/23/farm-lands-in-jaffna/ In the past we have seen valuable farm lands being used for housebuilding may be because those who donot have funds to buy a piece of land had no alternative as well as weakness of jaffna people(not willing to go to wanni and settle but like to live closer to relatives). Population increase demand more farm lands. The solution is already being practiced in many countries. They have started “rooftop gardens”-on flat concrete roof they fill earth and plant vegetables in homes. Also on large scale they have started “vertical farms”- in multi-storeyed buildings they plant vegetables, fruits, grains, flowers , yams etc for sale. This saves money in transporting goods from far-away places, saves fuel, saves wear on roads etc. If marketing is a problem local bodies can form farmers associations for every village buy lorries and transport their produce to markets outside the province.

In homes we waste valuable land, water, time and energy without utilising. Each home should have a home garden in the free space available by planting few selected vegetables, yams, plantain, fruit trees, leafy vegetables(keerai, wallarai etc) according to the limited space available. Even the kids can get involved after school in this useful venture. Nowadays if finding animal waste(saani, pulukkai) is difficult we can collect kitchen waste, dry leafs etc and prepare a “compost pit” in each home to use as fertiliser. Water from kitchen snk and bath could be used,if not enough well water too could be used.
Harvested/collected rainwater too is ok. Each home need not be self sufficient but to a certain extent people can be happy.

https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/21/64/ https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/21/64/#respond Mon, 21 Apr 2014 07:39:00 +0000 https://kokuvil.org/2014/04/21/ In 1950s some of the people of Kokuvil were engaged in agriculture, tobacco processing, cigar manufacturing, teaching, few in govt service(Locally) etc. Another category was Singapore pensioners who monthly get pension from Singapore. Most of the others were living outside Jaffna as state employees, businessman etc. The reason is Jaffna don’t have rivers and British rulers never developed Jaffna industrially. Economy of Jaffna people was known as “money order economy”. Even today most people get money from Canada,UK,Europe,Australia etc. Can we call it “bank draft economy”?. How long a community can survive like this(as refugees for life)?. The rich people from Jaffna should start industries there to give employment opportunities to Jaffna people.
Even for higher education like CIMA,Engg,Medicine,Pharmacy,Banking,Marketing etc in private institutes one should go to Colombo spend money for accommodation, studies, food etc most of which could be saved if they can study in Jaffna. Someone should come forward to start private institutes in Jaffna to get trained and qualify as well as sit for British exams..
